Snakes and Chiengora

by Susan DaffronProtected by Copyscape. Do not copy.

Today's big excitement was finding a garter snake in my garden. I would like to state for the record that I have a big problem with things that slither. As an organic gardener, I know earthworms are wonderful things. And snakes have their place in the ecosystem. I just don't want to touch them. Eww.

Clearly, I prefer fur to scales. Yesterday I brushed Cami the o-so-hairy white dog and got four chihuahuas worth of hair out of her. "Chihuahua" is my term for about a quarter of a grocery sack worth of fur (because I believe you'd have enough hair to build a new dog).

Four chihuahuas-worth of hair means that yes, Cami is experiencing folicular explosion. The weather has decided to be warm for real this time, so Cami's fur is leaving in a large way. The pile of hair was just massive. Once again I threw it all out onto the rosebushes and around the yard to discourage deer from using our yard as a snack bar. It would be nice to get some huckleberries from our bushes for a change. If the deer are using our yard as a nocturnal superhighway, it's just never going to happen.

And if the doghair on the rosebuses doesn't work, there's always chiengora. Yes, it's true, there are people who make sweaters out of dog hair. You spin the dog hair with wool and then knit it into mittens, gloves, and so on. Someday when I have *lots* of time, I want to try it. Apparently the things you make are incredibly warm and sort of waterproof. (As noted, coming up with the dog hair is NOT a problem.)

Or I could combine the two ideas as my sister suggested:

"All the chic deer are wearing chiengora this year. It's all the rage."
