Mail Merges and Daffodils

by Susan DaffronProtected by Copyscape. Do not copy.

Today I did a mail merge in Word XP. My question of the day is: why oh why did they screw up the merge features by making it "easier"? News flash for Microsquish: it's not. The wizard junk cluttering my screen is SO in the way. (You don't want to hear what I think about what they've done to the style features...yuck!).

In less nerdy news, currently, it is pouring rain outside. It's been very dark out there all day, which I find hugely depressing. Apparently, we're having some "Pacific flow" that's dumping endless water everywhere. The snow level is predicted to drop to 4,000 feet, which is bad news since we're at 3,000 feet and as we all know, sometimes they weather gurus are wrong about these things.

Before we had this big rain incident, we had the big cold incident. Last week, the ground froze. This was bad news since I had ordered many MANY daffodil bulbs from a mail order garden center. Unfortunately the vendor apparently didn't realize that, here in the sticks, the ground usually freezes before November 1st, which is when their shipment arrived.

However, the big rain incident did cause a bit of a warming trend, so that o-so-briefly, the ground unfroze a little. Yesterday, I took a few hours off in the afternoon and planted. Adorned in my stylish blue rain suit, I spent a lot of time on my hands and knees in the rain and mud planting 160 bulbs of various ilk. (I'm sure the neighbors who drove by were amused...in my blue suit, I looked like I belonged in the movie "A Perfect Storm.") Anyway, now I have blisters, since some of the ground was still partly frozen. There are a number of daffodils that were planted where they were planted only because I could dig in that particular place.

But as I told James, the good news is that this Spring we'll have "surprise" daffodils in unusual places. (After a long winter, I never remember where I've planted stuff.) In any case, I'm sure they'll be a very welcome sight and well worth the blisters.
